Start a Club

If there isn't a club nearby to where you live, joining a club is not an option. However, getting a group of people together to start a team might not be the hardest thing to do.

With the recent influx of Irish people and the spread of the sports popularity in North America it seems a lot more people are discovering this fast and exciting game. Who knows? You may be surrounded by people interested in trying the game. So why not start a club?

Here are a few tips that may help you succeed:

Spread the word!!

  • Get your hands on some equipment (hurls,sliothar etc..)
  • Set up an email address for your team (e.g gmail)
  • Use social media to get the word out (e.g Facebook, twitter)
  • Post ads on sites like Craigslist, Kijiji and Reddit
  • Make up a bright poster with contact info, sport description, etc..
  • Make flyers and business cards (give to friends, local businesses, gyms, bars etc.)
  • Get in touch with the local Irish community
  • Contact local media and let them know your plans 
  • Be patient (It wont happen over night) 
Baby Steps

When you have a few people interested, ask them to help you with recruitment
and spreading the word. Next up you should:

  • Form an organizing group(committee) and delegate different tasks to different people
  • Gather more equipment (hurls, sliotars, helmets etc..) as required
  • Ask local businesses to sponsor your team
  • Find a place to practice
  • Host demo's/workshops with different groups to help with recruitment
  • Decide on a team name, crest, colors etc..
  • Order team jerseys
If you get this far, Congratulations, its time to go and find the nearest team to play against!
