Hurling Basics

For someone not familiar with it, the game of hurling can appear to be an extremely difficult game to learn. I agree that the game requires certain skills but it isn't that hard to pick up the basics. I like to use the old saying "An easy game to learn, a difficult one to master".

I will go through a few of the basics:

Hurl/Hurley This is the wooden stick used to propel the sliotar down the field in a game. Each hurl is handcrafted from an Ash tree. They range in sizes and weight.

Sliotar This is the leather ball which is used in games. It is a little smaller than a baseball.

Point When the sliotar is hit over the crossbar, 1 point is awarded.

Goal When the sliotar is scored into the net past the goalie(under the crossbar). This gives the scoring team 3 points.

Wide ball When the sliotar goes out to the left or right of the goals it is declared wide and given back to the opposing keeper. No points are awarded.

Taking a free

Free A free is awarded when a foul has taken place. A player from the team awarded the free must then pick up the sliotar (with the hurl) and strike it without touching it with the hand.

Helmet A helmet is required when playing hurling to prevent injuries.
