Welcome

Welcome to the Maple Hurling blog. A blog I hope will help foster further development of the game of Hurling in Canada and beyond. The dream is that this will become a place for newbies to the game to pick up skills, a place for hurlers across Canada to communicate,a place for fixtures, results and news from all the Canadian clubs.

This is the fruition of an idea I had since first moving to Canada from Ireland almost 3yrs ago. I grew up with the game (kinda hard not to with a hurling pitch across the road), trained and played games all through my childhood then I stopped for a while but since moving abroad I have been drawn back to it. I guess its like the old saying goes "You don't realise your Irishness until you go abroad".

Montreal Shamrocks

I helped in part in reviving the Montreal Shamrocks hurling team and have been involved with coaching them for about 2 years now. Recently with the travel I was doing I decided to attempt to start up a team in Ottawa, Canada's capital. So far it has been going great and the interest is growing everyday.

Ottawa Hurling Club's first practice

It is great to see the improvement in people who have never played the game before(be it Canadians or Irish). I think the hardest part is getting new people out and putting the hurl in their hand. The game is completely foreign to the majority of North Americans but I have had new people tell me after their first practice they were addicted!

Please feel free to drop me comments on my posts. I will be looking for ways to make this the best it can be and any help, info, results etc.. you can send my way the better.
